In 2016, the EU set up new customs legislation: the Union Customs Code, or UCC for short. It aims to modernise and digitise customs procedures, from electronic customs declarations to adapted tariffs. The technological changes and challenges associated with this legislation have never been greater for Belgian companies in the last 25 years.
Since January 2020, companies are already required to comply with some of the obligations of the UCC. Nevertheless, many amongst them are often not aware enough of the importance of these legally-mandated reforms and the many changes that are still to come. This attitude not only jeopardises their entire logistics and supply chain, but it also means that they are missing an opportunity to consolidate their international market position.
