Can the real estate sector save the climate?

21 juin 2019

An article written by Erik Van den Broeck (MRICS, BDO Corporate Finance) about the future prospects of real estate with respect to global warming was published in monthly magazine Bouwen Aan Vlaanderen.

The article investigates the recent evolution, the opportunities and the challenges of the real estate sector considering the 2030 European climate objectives about greenhouse gas emission and energy efficiency. If a reduction of the E-level of buildings below the E100 level was almost unthinkable 10 years ago, most building permits delivered for new constructions today relate to E30 – or lower – levels.

Yet, there is still a long way to go for the Belgian real estate landscape before reaching a fully “Nearly Zero Energy” (NZE) threshold, whether we talk about housing, offices, production plants or care infrastructure…

Interested? The full article (one-pager), written in Dutch, can be found online, in page 33 of the April-May 2019 edition of the magazine Bouwen Aan Vlaanderen.
