New VAT filing calendar for 2025

The Belgian VAT Authorities have released the new calendar (NL/FR) for VAT return filings and payment for the year 2025. This announcement includes a critical change that will impact the filing deadlines.

Key change

Starting in 2025, if the VAT return filing and payment deadline of the 20th (monthly VAT returns) or 25th (quarterly VAT returns) falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a legal holiday, the deadline will no longer be extended to the next working day. This marks a significant shift from previous practices where deadlines were adjusted to account for weekends and public holidays. Only for the VAT return to be filed over the 4th quarter of 2024, the filing deadline is fixed at 27 January 2025 in case no refund is claimed of a VAT credit amount.

What does this mean for your business?

Businesses will need to plan accordingly to ensure VAT returns are prepared and submitted by the 20th or 25th depending on the periodicity, regardless of whether it is a weekday or not. This change emphasizes the importance of being proactive and ensuring all VAT related matters are handled ahead of time to avoid missing the fixed deadline.

Action steps

  1. Mark your calendar: Note all the relevant dates for 2025 and plan your workflows to accommodate the fixed deadlines.
  2. Adjust planning: Review and possibly adjust your internal processes to ensure VAT returns are ready in advance of the deadline.
