European Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR)

Be ready in time and avoid business losses

The EU Deforestation Regulation – or EUDR – is a European regulation to prevent global deforestation and forest degradation.

Introduced in two different phases according to company size, this EU law has major implications for companies that bring into the European market and/or export from Europe (products made from) certain raw materials. In the event of non-compliance, for example, there is a risk of fines, the confiscation of products and a negative impact on your company’s (ESG) reputation.

Key deadlines & requirements

The EUDR was originally going to be introduced on 30 December 2024, but this deadline was postponed. It is now being implemented in two phases:
  • Phase 1: 30 December 2025 – mandatory application of the legislation for large and medium-sized enterprises
  • Phase 2: 30 June 2026 – mandatory application of the legislation for small and micro-enterprises
In preparation for these dates, operators and traders must develop a due diligence procedure – and statement for the relevant products. Therefore, it is crucial to map out your supply chain and the origin of your raw materials in a timely manner.

To which raw materials does the Regulation apply?

The EUDR applies to imports and exports of (products made from) the following raw materials in Europe:

  • Cocoa
  • Wood
  • Coffee
  • Oil palm
  • Rubber
  • Cattle
  • Soy

Purpose of the Regulation

The main purpose of the new EUDR rules is to end deforestation & forest degradation. This helps globally reduce the EU’s contribution to climate change and biodiversity loss.

The law also protects the livelihoods of millions of people, such as indigenous peoples and local communities that depend on forest ecosystems. Companies have to demonstrate that their products respect the rights of these people.

Lastly, European consumers can be sure that the products they buy do not contribute to the disappearance or damage of forests, especially irreplaceable tropical forests.
